Filler Text Generators

When You Can’t Find the Right Words

Sometimes it takes longer to think of the words on a page than it takes to code the xhtml. To alleviate this problem, web designers have the option to use "filler" or "dummy" text. The most popular choice for filler text is the Lorem Ipsum latin text.

You will find some background information on the Lorem Ipsum text and an automatic generator at http://www.lipsum.com/. Select how much text you need, and Voila! Instant text to copy and paste into your web page.

Besides the above generator, there are other fun text generators:

TIP: Instead of re-visiting these web sites again and again, copy and paste a large amount of filler text into a blank text file in your text editor. Save as "filler.txt" and open the file whenever you need extra text content.

FYI… I was looking at the different links on this page and noticed that one of them has a “page not found” for http://www.subterrane.com/loremipsum.shtml

All you tutorials thus far have been fantastic. I’m just a beginner (don’t want to be a pro), but I do want to create my own website. So your lessons have been exactly what I need/want.

But this lesson leaves me confused. I understand what these does…it creates dummy text…I just don’t understand why? Is is just so you can code a website-insert dummy text-just to see how it looks? With the plan that you will go back later and replace the dummy text with the real text you want? If so, it would have helped me if you had stated this more clearly. (okay I think I get this).

But then you say “Instead of re-visiting these web sites again and again, copy and paste a large amount of filler text into a blank text file in your text editor. Save as “filler.txt” and open the file whenever you need extra text content.” But have you discussed txt files yet?

Thanks for all your help and GREAT lessons.
